This article about a Christians thoughts on the final Harry Potter movie is very interesting, it links Christianity to the theme of the movie. To some extent I can see it (though I haven't watched any of the harry potter movies) from what I hear it could very well be a form of Christ's story. But I also beg to ask whether the overwhelming witchery, spell casting, and wizardry is a good way to present Jesus. Why present all the evil in the world as good in a fictional novel or movie? Even if it is to present the gospel in a new way.
In the same way, I was thinking about The Book Of Eli, this violent, cussing, incredible movie is very fond of Christianity, presenting it as truth. Is it right to present Christian Themes dipped in evil, or flavored with violence? What will the audiance take back from watching/reading/listening to this type of entertainment? How does Jesus fit into the entertainment industry?
Me personally wanting to become an actress in pop culture this question has begged to be answered and I have come to the conclusion that you can glorify God through the arts, even in a non-Christian setting. God gave us talents so we can use them to glorify Him, I believe we can glorify Him even in the secular industry by being a light in our area of talent. As a simple example take The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. I've seen the movie, read the book, and seen the play. Presenting Christ in such a powerful setting is a great experience, and portraying such characters as Aslan, Lucy, and others is a great chance at portraying the light. But what about playing evil characters? The Witch, Wolf, and many opthers are not what you would call examples of Christ, but they bring the story to a completion, they round it out per say. Without the evil there would be no good, all would be mediocre, But where is the line drawn? Does one play any character then so that you may show both the bad and good sides? I believe you can play a moral Character in a non-moral play and please God, and I believe you can play a non-moral character in a moral-play and still please God, but there is a point where you are no longer using your talents to please Him, you are merely "working", I believe this changes from person to person, but that overall, If you can feel God's pleasure in what you do, you're doing it right.
